May 14, 2009: Video interview with Roger Werne

A fascinating interview with Roger Werne, Ph.D..  Roger is the Deputy Director in the Industrial Partnerships office for Lawrence Livermore Labs.

We think of Lawrence Livermore as a chemical technology company but Roger says, “We are the best applied science lab in the world.”

“We patent our intellectual property and license it to companies who are interested in commercializing it and making money.”

Roger says, Lawrence Livermore is “open for business.”

“We have lots of technology, breakthrough technology, that can revolutionize markets, build companies from the ground up and make them very successful.”

In the Industrial Partnerships office, Roger’s team finds companies, negotiates a license with them and helps make them be successful.

Their products include Computer software, technology and materials, medical technology and diagnostics.
What can you do if you are interested?

Roger says, “Interested entrepreneurs should go to our website at https://www.llnl.gov/ and look under the technology transfer header.”  “We have, right now, 17 highlighted technologies which we are making available to companies but we have, behind that, over 2,000 patents which are all technologies which we think are of interest to the commercial market.”

They license about 20 licenses a year and prefer to work with small start-ups “because those are the ones that are able to bring a revolutionary technology to the market.”

Who are they looking for?

“Somebody that has the entrepreneurial gene. The is a person who has got the passion, drive and know how to take a fledgling concept and turn it into a real company, Of course, they need management skill, marketing knowledge and financing capitol.”

The bottom line. . . “An entrepreneurial team that can take one of our technologies and take it out the door and make it a big success.”

They are very proud of what they have done thus far. Roger says they have, “lots of success stores” and, “we want to see that legacy continue into the future.”

Check out Roger's video.
