I found this in the editorial section in yesterday's (Feb 19, 2009) Independent.
A recent informal Pleasanton City Council discussion of economic development revealed strong interest in a “right-to-do-business” ordinance.
The ordinance would free businesses to offer music and keep late-night hours, especially downtown. It’s hoped a right-to-do-business ordinance would have an invigorating effect, drawing patrons to downtown bistros, restaurants and the like.
Speaking from the audience, Peter McDonald observed that the idea for such an ordinance has been around for awhile, with everyone supportive of it. “For three years there’s been one issue on which there is consensus: a right-to-do-business ordinance. It’s needed so we can have entertainment businesses,” McDonald said.
It would stimulate “a fun environment,” added downtown merchant Melanie Sadek.
Pleasanton is ready for it. The Old Firehouse on Railroad Avenue is being transformed into a little theater and arts center. People will congregate at the downtown cafes to cap off the night, if the cafes are there. We hope the City Council will adopt this much desired ordinance.
